The former parliament and government district, whose most important buildings stretch directly along the banks of the Rhine, is regarded as the symbol of the first successful German democracy. For details see: https://www.bonn.de/bonn-erleben/besichtigen-entdecken/politisches-bonn.php
  • Outside Bonn
Drachenfels and Drachenburg Castle — with spectacular views of the Rhine Valley.
On the opposite side of the river there is a the Siebengebirge mountain range. The westernmost elevation is the Drachenfels mountain with an old castle ruin and the Drachenburg Castle below. You can take the ferry from Bad Godesberg to cross over.

Drachenfelsbahn: The Drachenfelsbahn runs from the valley station in Königswinter up to the summit of Drachenfels. Follow the 1520m long route up to the summit. The Drachenfelsbahn is Germany’s oldest rack railway, and in English it’s often referred to as the Drachenfels Railway or Drachenfels Cog Railway. Along the way, you pass Schloss Drachenburg, a fairytale-like castle at the middle station.

Drachenburg Castle: On December 6 & 7, 2025 there is a special Christmas event (2-7 pm CET) with a fixed number of tickets, which have to be pre-booked online. (10 Euro per person, LINK to book, in German available only.)

Drachenfels: At the top, you’re rewarded with panoramic views over the Rhine Valley and the ruins of the medieval Drachenfels Castle.

    – The Drachenfels is steeped in legend, the most renowned being the tale of Siegfried, the heroic figure from the Nibelungenlied. According to the story, he slew the dragon Fafnir, who had made his lair in a cave within the mountain. After the battle, Siegfried bathed in the dragon’s blood, gaining near invincibility. This dramatic myth gave the hill its evocative name: Drachenfels, or “Dragon’s Rock.”

    – The dragons of the Drachenfels and the Nibelungen saga versus the Chinese dragon tradition are worlds apart! Both dragons are seen as powerful, awe-inspiring creatures that influence the world around them, whether through fear or reverence. Chinese dragons control weather and water; Western dragons often dwell in caves or mountains, like the Drachenfels, symbolizing primal forces. The dragon of the Drachenfels is a monster to conquer, while the Chinese dragon is a force to honor.
