He was a Director & Professor of Economics at the Indian Institute of Dalit Studies (IIDS), New Delhi. He served the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) as a Senior Academic Consultant (in the rank of Professor) for a brief period. Dr. Mamgain also worked as a Senior Fellow at the Institute for Human Development, and a faculty at the Institute of Applied Manpower Research. He has a doctoral degree in Economics from the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He has a vast research experience of over 30 years. His core areas of research include: labour, employment, migration, skill development, human poverty, inclusive development and impact evaluation of variegated government programmes. He specializes in undertaking large sample-survey-based field research. He has completed 25 major research projects sponsored by the national and international agencies, such as, ILO, World Bank, ICSSR, Government of UK and so on. He has authored and co-authored nine books, and has published more than 65 research papers in reputed peer-reviewed national and international journals, including a few published by the SAGE and Springer.
